Clinical Counselling

Clinical counselling at the CCC is offered by a certified/registered counsellor with either the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association (CCPA) or the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors (BCACC). Sessions are for individuals, couples, and families. Clinical counsellors ensure a thorough assessment leads to a collaborative support plan to meet client needs while drawing on their strengths and preferences. Clinical counselling at CCC incorporates experience-based modalities, such as creative arts, mindfulness, and somatic experiencing in the clinical session.

Approaches and modalities

Clinical counselling at the CCC draws on evidence-based models such as: CBT, DBT skills work, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Emotion-focused therapy and Emotion-focused family therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Attachment-focused trauma therapy, Polyvagal theory, Neurobiology of attachment, Psychodynamic theory, Motivational Interviewing, Family Systems, Play therapy, Mindfulness-based therapy, and Somatic Experiencing. The CCC prioritizes a “bottom up approach” where attachment, sensory, and nervous system regulation needs are prioritized before engaging in cognitive and behavioural modification.

Sessions

Clinical sessions take place in-person in downtown Squamish, or virtually from the comfort of your home. Our sessions are typically 50 minutes in length but can be scheduled according to client needs.

The Centre

Currently, the CCC is partnering with the lovely Ashtanga Yoga studio on Cleveland Avenue. In-person sessions are held here. Stay tuned for future plans for the Centre’s new location.

Therapeutic Recreation

Therapeutic Recreation is a person-centred healthcare profession that employs evidence-informed leisure and recreation interventions to improve and maximize health, physical function, social and emotional well-being and overall quality of life.

Outdoor therapies harness the therapeutic benefits of engaging with natural environments and physical activities within a safe, therapeutic relationship. Incorporating these activities into therapy can significantly enhance emotional regulation, foster sense of connection with the natural world, and promote overall mental and physical health. The CCC offers a range of outdoor experiences, from mindfulness guiding in nature to therapeutic outdoor recreation programs.

Mindfulness guiding in nature is a gentle way to experience the benefits of immersing oneself in nature. A walk in the forest or a seated pose by a lake with the support of a guide walking you through a mindfulness practice, tailored just for you.

Outdoor Recreation Therapy supports clients in working towards their own goals for health and wellness with certified guides educated in psychology and counselling skills, models, and approaches. This ensures safety both in the outdoor activity and in the guided relationship. We aim to tailor these services to the strengths and needs of the individual, respecting that for some, initial scaffolding support may lead to independently engaging in these activities within the community, while for others, ongoing support may be needed to access these experiences.

  • Rock Climbing offers a unique blend of physical challenge and mental focus. As individuals navigate climbing routes, they engage in emotion regulation, enhance problem-solving skills, and experience a profound sense of accomplishment. The concentration required for climbing also helps in reducing anxiety and stress, while the connection with nature promotes a sense of grounding and mindfulness.

  • Paddling on rivers or lakes provides a rhythmic, soothing experience that encourages relaxation and stress relief. The gentle movement and natural surroundings promote a meditative state, improve mood, and foster a sense of calm. Paddling also enhances physical fitness and offers opportunities for social interaction and team-building.

  • Hiking through diverse landscapes offers both physical exercise and mental rejuvenation. The immersive experience of being in nature reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression, while the physical activity boosts mood and overall well-being. Hiking allows individuals to disconnect from daily stresses, reflect on their experiences, and enjoy the therapeutic benefits of fresh air and natural beauty.

Music Therapy

Active and passive engagement in music, through playing music, learning music, performing, recording, writing and composing, offers countless ways to deepen the therapeutic process. Music Therapy is an evidence-based approach for supporting mental health and wellness when sessions are delivered by a Certified Music Therapist (MTA). At CCC, music therapy is offered by an MTA and a Certified Clinical Counsellor.

Sessions offer opportunities to create music alongside the therapist, to write, to learn, to perform, to produce, and to connect musically with one self and others. The Clinical Counselling music therapist intentionally uses music to support goals tailored to the client's unique strengths and needs.

Some examples of therapeutic uses of music: Song-writing, recording, and electronic music production for emotional connection and expression, singing for stress-reduction, somatic experiencing, and nervous system training, aiding in overcoming anxiety and depression loops, instrument learning for cognitive rehabilitation, improvisation for mindfulness, and rhythm exercises for accessing flow states and supporting executive functioning skills.

At the CCC, a wide variety of instruments and genres are available to meet client strengths, needs, and preferences. Piano, guitar, ukulele, cello/violin, drums and other percussive instruments are all available for in-session use. Electronic music production and recording equipment are also available. Clients can find an outlet and a direct experience for their counselling process through the therapeutic use of music.

Art Therapy

Program coming soon!

Art Therapy is a therapeutic approach that utilizes creative processes such as drawing, painting, and sculpting to support mental health and wellness. By engaging in artistic expression, individuals can explore and communicate emotions, gain insights into their inner experiences, and develop healthy coping strategies. Art therapy offers a non-verbal outlet for self-expression, helping to reduce stress, enhance self-awareness, and promote emotional healing.

An Art Therapist or a Therapeutic Art Facilitator at the CCC are educated at the master’s or bachelor’s level, respectively, are trained in counselling skills and models, and are passionate about supporting clients through the therapeutic use of creative art forms.

Community Outreach and Support Services

Community outreach and support workers provide a variety of services in nature, community, and in the home. These services are intended for clients who need practical and ongoing support for activities of daily living such as executive functioning skills, behaviour support, and connection to community.

Behaviour Support

Behaviour support services are intended for neurodivergent families in need of ND affirming care and connections. They are available to provide one-to-one and small group sessions, in home, in community, or in nature, as needed by the client.

Support workers are informed on ND affirming philosophy and practice. Support workers are educated on PDA-friendly strategies and approaches. Most importantly, support workers are chosen based on “fit” with family strengths and needs and are aligned with the CCC value of relational safety as foundational to all of our services.

Executive Functioning Skills Support

Support workers can be booked for assistance with executive functioning. Kids, youth, and adults needing support with EF skills and completing daily tasks can request skills training, tutoring, and “body doubling” services. Support with EF skills ensures that counselling clients have access to in-home services to help build skills while helping you check important to-do’s off your list.

Connection to Community

Support workers are wonderful opportunities for helping clients connect to community. With their support, clients can access assistance in transitioning from isolation to connection. Do you need support with groceries, meal planning, going to the gym, getting to the pool, or registering and joining a community program? Our support workers can assist you with this and more.

With client permission, all service providers at the CCC engage in regular Integrated Case Management meetings to ensure continuity of care.
